WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 30, 2008) – No. 14 Rollins used a big second half run to get past Eckerd 83-75 in front of a raucous Tars crowd on Wednesday, giving 28 year veteran head coach Tom Klusman his 500th career victory. Senior Jonny Reibel led four Tars in double figures with 25 points while Jeremy Sharpe chipped in 21.
The 500 victory milestone is another achievement is Klusman’s illustrious career that spans more than 36 years as a player and coach at Rollins. The victory improves his career record to 500-289.
With the win, Rollins (16-3, 5-3 SSC) moves into third place in the Sunshine State Conference behind co-leaders Florida Southern and Tampa. The Tars will travel to Tampa on Saturday, February 2 to start the second half of the conference schedule.
Craig Reichel hit three, three-pointers en route to 15 points while Kevin Hogan also hit three from long range for 13 points. Rollins struggled on the glass, getting out rebounded 34-28, but out-shot the Tritons 51 percent to 48 percent.
Josh King led Eckerd (11-7, 4-4 SSC) with 22 points and eight rebounds. Damone Morris added 14 points with Marcus Washington netting 13.
Eckerd silenced the Alfond Sports Center crowd of 1,283 by jumping out to a 9-2 lead in the first two plus minutes of the game. The Triton advantage would balloon to eight at the 14:41 mark before the Tars put together a 12-3 run to put the home team on top half way through the period. Eckerd would re-take the lead on their next possession, but a Sharpe dunk put Rollins back on top 20-19 where they would stay for the rest of the period.
The Tars held a 40-36 advantage at the break with Reichel’s 13 leading the way.
Eckerd began the second half the same as the first and took a one point lead with 18:32 left. Back to back three pointers by Sharpe gave the Tars the lead, which they would not surrender the rest of the way. The Tars put it away in the middle of the second half, running off an 11-2 run to take a comfortable 62-51 lead with nine minutes left. Eckerd got to within six in the final seconds before Reibel sealed the deal with a pair from the stripe.
No. 14 Rollins will take to the road for a February 3 battle at Tampa. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. The Spartans have been the Tars arch nemesis the past few years and picked up a 70-60 win over Rollins earlier this year.
